Weather:
Similar to Cambodia, Laos basically has two seasons; the dry season runs from October through Apr and the wet season from May to September. However, in the dry season, it gets cooler from December through February.
The early part of the rainy season also tends to be warmer, and rain showers are generally short and occur in the afternoon. Later in the rainy season the rain tends to be more frequent and showers can be longer and heavier. In northern Laos, rainfall is generally less heavy and it is more likely to rain at night or in the morning.
Across Laos, throughout much of the rainy season, expect temperatures of 29°C (84F) in the lowlands and 23°C (73F) in the valleys.
When to go:
High Season (Nov–Mar): The best all-round time to visit. Accommodation should be booked in advance during the peak Christmas and New Year period.
Shoulder Season (Jul & Aug): Wet in most parts of Laos with high humidity, but the landscapes are emerald green. It is popular time for European tourists and students with a long summer break.
Low Season (Apr–Jun, Sep & Oct): April and May brings the hot season to Laos when the thermostat hits 40°C. September and October can be very wet, but some incredible cloud formations accompany the deluge.
